Funchal , MIMOSA

Funchal, the main city on the island of Madeira offers its 100,000 inhabitants a bus-only public transport system due to the city’s hilly and narrow streets.

Over the past 10 years, large infrastructural investments have resulted in new impressive motorways, bridges and tunnels in Funchal that provide the basis for an efficient public transportation system. As investments would be too high to establish a light train system, all efforts are put into increasing the efficiency of the bus system. It is hence no surprise that nine of the 13 measures Funchal has launched within MIMOSA are either directly or indirectly linked to the bus system. The implementation of the new “Green Line” that follows the main hotel route, is therefore top priority when it comes to MIMOSA evaluation activities. Meeting the tourists' demand for travel, this one main public bus service substitutes many of the small hotel courtesy buses. Evaluation on the "Green Line" bus service is based on 17 indicators taking into account the environment, economy, society, traffic and quality of service.  Additionally, a cost-benefit analysis will be carried out to demonstrate the city’s high ambitions and commitment to achieving sustainable urban transportation in the long-term. Initial results show that expectations are met. By the end of July 2011, 21 hotels have already signed protocols to commit themselves to offer their guests public transport tickets instead of their own bus services.
