Funchal , MIMOSA

The 12 July will go down in history as a significant milestone in Madeira’s path to sustainable mobility. As part of Funchal’s Electric Mobility Programme the city has installed two electric charging stations and introduced two electric vehicles to the city fleet. This marks effective and succesful collaboration between the Regional & National Government as well as the EU’s CIVITAS MIMOSA team.

Both the Electric Mobility project and CIVITAS MIMOSA have proved vital in creating the right conditions for increasing the number of electric vehicles in the region, by ensuring the existence of adequate infrastructure for the development of the electric vehicle fleet. The launch event included a presentation of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, an electric vehicle with high density lithium ion batteries offering a range of 150 km per charge as measured by the New European Driving Cycle. The car can travel 100km for only EUR 1.23 to charge the batteries during the night.  By encouraging the use of renewable energy sources in transport and increasing the integration of renewable energy sources in electricity production, it is hoped to increase the number of vehicles in the Region to at least 10% by the year 2020. Funchal's Electric Mobility Programme seeks to pioneer at a national level the adoption of new and innovative vehicles capable of improving sustainability.
