Collecting and Managing Data to Support Travel Information

Aberdeen

Aberdeen City Council developed a smart journey website to inform road users of realtime information such as proposed, current and emergency works or incidents that could cause disruption to the road network.

Implementing sustainable mobility

The platform can provide links for users to report issues and sign up for alerts by email.

Current data gathering is limited and sporadic, providing limited information on journey times but little in the way of routing, options for travel and predictions on journey times by all modes. With the emergence of smart phone technology, progression needs to be made to enable real time journey information to be ‘pushed’ straight to the device of the user. To enable this to be developed a city region wide networks of data gathering devices, using ANPR or BlueTooth will be established to build a baseline picture of journeys into and around the city region which will then enable all modes journey information to be computed and disseminated to users. A journey planning facility will be created using live and historic traffic data to allow integration of all modes for a journey using one interface.

Development of a smartphone application will facilitate information currently stored on the smart journey website, along with other traffic data such as journey times for all modes, car park guidance, variable message displays and air quality information.
