Platanias

Living Lab - Platanias

Platanias is a municipality of almost 21.000 inhabitants on the Greek island of Crete, which attracts thousands of visitors every year and has emerged as one of Greece’s main tourist destinations. It is located about 10 km west from the city of Chania and east of Kastelli-Kissamos, on Chania Bay.

The municipality of Platanias was formed following the 2011 local government reform by the merge of the following 4 former municipalities, which later became municipal units: Kolymvari, Moussouri, Platanias, and Voukolies. The municipality has an area of 495 km2.

Platanias Today

In order to return urban places to people and to convert Municipality of Platanias to a liveable municipality and a green destination, the city administration aims to change the direction of urban transport strategy and transport policy development towards a more sustainable future, already committing to this by signing the Covenant of Mayors in 2013.

Platanias is developing its first SUMP using a co-creation simplified approach, supported by analytical tools. Forging cross-sectoral links between transport operators and the education, retail and logistics sectors and creating sustainable mobility solutions with the tourism industry – of great importance in the area - are vital to successful plan delivery. It will work across municipal boundaries by harmonising strategic actions among the neighbouring municipalities on Crete’s north-west coast that have shared mobility structures.

Platanias addresses mobility challenges specific to island cities, such as the high seasonal fluctuation in tourists’ mobility demand; the increased demand on logistics movements during the high season; the importance of the agricultural sector; and the need to create links between the hinterland and urban areas. Aside from this, limited funding opportunities are a problem, whilst resilience is important in an area at high risk of natural disasters (fires and floods) that has minimal transport infrastructure.
